My solo Cornershop show "Touchdown: New Paintings" held
on May 1st, 1999, was a great experience. It was the only time that
I got to exhibit my paintings and artist's books in Buffalo and
it was my first solo show outside of New York City. Charles Bernstein
and I drove with paintings up from NYC and Anya and I hung them
together. And even though the show was only up for one day--it generated
a thoughtful long review by Elizabeth Licata in Art Voices. It was
wonderful to be able to present my work to this audience of friends,
students, and local neighborhood people. My most memorable moment
came in the afternoon before the show opened when a elderly local
women with her white hair neatly rolled in a bun came in to look
at the paintings. She spied a painting that included a large cut-up
paper doll from the 1940s or 50s. She was fascinated since she remembered
playing with that paper doll as a child. I was so pleased to meet
someone who had experienced that image personally. But she got angry
when we tried to photograph her with the painting and turned her
back to the camera.
